About us
We believe artificial general intelligence is possible, and our mission is to take real steps toward it. We believe that the bottleneck in AI progress is no longer compute, data, or scale. The bottleneck is conceptual. We need new ideas on the nature of intelligence. And that’s exactly what the Society was created for.
We are not interested in the safe bets, the well-traveled paths, or the certainties. We’re here to step outside the norm, go for the Hail Mary, and chase down that crazy idea. We aim to be a crucible for conceptual breakthroughs, and our vision is to cultivate an all-cylinders-firing environment for their generation, analysis, and dissemination. Probing deeper into the true nature of our reality as intelligent beings will not only enable new technologies—the understanding we develop will also give us confidence that what we’re building will actually be beneficial, and not harmful to humanity.
We are a highly interdisciplinary group, and call on students & experts from every background. Engineering, computer science, neuroscience, etc. are to be expected—but we also invite the economists, the political scientists, the philosophers, the artists, and more! Unique insights into the nature of intelligence can come from everywhere, and there are none we can afford to ignore.
We currently have chapters at the University of Toronto and the California Institute of Technology. We spotlight our work on our Twitter, Linkedin, and Instagram, and we are currently recruiting!
